Yungahelea, a new genus of predaceous midge from northwestern Argentina (Culicomorpha: Ceratopogonidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SPINELLI,GUSTAVO R.; RONDEROS,MARÍA M.; DONATO,MARIANO; SIRI,AUGUSTO.
ABSTRACT A new monotypic genus and species of predaceous midge from the southernmost area of the Argentinean Yungas, Yungahelea australis Spinelli and Ronderos, is described and illustrated from male and female adults. It belongs to a group containing the Ceratopogonini genera Parabezzia Malloch, Diaphanobezzia Ingram and Macfie, Spinellihelea Borkent, Grogan and Picado, Leptohelea Wirth and Blanton, and Fittkauhelea Wirth and Blanton. Phylogenetic interpretation indicates that Yungahelea is the sister group of Spinellihelea or the clade composed by Parabezzia and Diaphanobezzia.

ZapA, a possible virulence factor from Proteus mirabilis exhibits broad protease substrate specificity BJMBR
Anéas,M.A.F.; Portaro,F.C.V.; Lebrun,I.; Juliano,L.; Palma,M.S.; Fernandes,B.L..
The opportunistic bacterium Proteus mirabilis secretes a metalloprotease, ZapA, considered to be one of its virulence factors due to its IgA-degrading activity. However, the substrate specificity of this enzyme has not yet been fully characterized. In the present study we used fluorescent peptides derived from bioactive peptides and the oxidized ß-chain of insulin to determine the enzyme specificity. The bradykinin- and dynorphin-derived peptides were cleaved at the single bonds Phe-Ser and Phe-Leu, with catalytic efficiencies of 291 and 13 mM/s, respectively. Besides confirming already published cleavage sites, a novel cleavage site was determined for the ß-chain of insulin (Val-Asn). Both the natural and the recombinant enzyme displayed the same broad...

Franceschi,Eduardo A; Boccanelli,Silvia I.
Floristic-structural analysis of spontaneous little forests in the J. F. Villarino park (Santa Fe, Argentina). The anthropization process in the Pampean grassland has brought about an increasing presence of trees. In this study we analyzed the structure and composition of little forests which have resulted from the spontaneous multiplication of tree species in the J. F. Villarino Park, in Zavalla, Province of Santa Fe, Argentina. Using a plot sampling method, individuals were counted to determine density per species in the upper and treelets strata. Height and DBH of individuals in the upper stratum were recorded. Abundance-coverage of herbaceous and woody species saplings was estimated in the lower stratum. Soil humidity and ground-level light intensity...

Zeebrugge Port extension sediment transport: measurement on and off the Belgian coast by means of tracers OMA
Bastin, A.; Malherbe, B.; Caillot, A..
An extensive program of tracer experiments was carried out for calculating sediment transport in the vicinity of the Port of Zeebrugge where extension operations are in progress. Offshore radioactive bottom tracers were used for studying the sand transport along the beaches where erosion problems exist. On the beach itself fluorescent tracers were used. For the evaluation of the silting-up rate of the access channels to the harbour a series of radioactive bottom and suspension tracers were tracked in situ. For determining the efficiency of future dumping grounds a combination of bottom tracers and suspension tracers was used. In total, 18 experiments with radioactive tracers were carried out and 9 with fluorescent ones.

Zeolites in poultry and swine production Ciência Rural
Schneider,Aline Félix; Zimmermann,Otavio Fernando; Gewehr,Clóvis Eliseu.
ABSTRACT: Zeolites are minerals that have intriguing properties such as water absorption, ion adsorption and cation exchange capacity. There are approximately 80 species of natural zeolites recognized and hundreds of artificial zeolites, which have been researched in several fields. Due to their chemical characteristics, zeolites have great potential for use in animal production, especially in poultry and swine farms, as food additives, litter amendment and treatment of residues, with direct and indirect effects on performance, yield and quality of carcass, ambience of farm sheds and reduction of environmental pollution.

Zero-inflated beta regression model for leaf citrus canker incidence in orange genotypes grafted onto different rootstocks Biological Sciences
Gonzatto Junior, Oilson Alberto; Guedes, Terezinha Aparecida; Gonçalves-Zuliane, Aline Maria Orbolato; Nunes, William Mario de Carvalho.
Data with excess zeros are frequently found in practice, and the recommended analysis is to use models that adequately address the counting of zero observations. In this study, the Zero Inflated Beta Regression Model (BeZI) was used on experimental data to describe the mean incidence of leaf citrus canker in orange groves under the influence of genotype and rootstocks of origin. Based on the model, it was possible to quantify the odds that a null observation to mean incidence comes from a particular plant according to genotype and rootstock, and estimate its expected value according to this combination. Laranja Caipira rootstock proved to be the most resistant to leaf citrus canker as well as Limão Cravo proved to be the most fragile. The Ipiguá IAC,...

Zero-inflated Poisson regression models for QTL mapping applied to tick-resistance in a Gyr x Holstein F2 population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Fabyano Fonseca; Tunin,Karen P.; Rosa,Guilherme J.M.; Silva,Marcos V.B. da; Azevedo,Ana Luisa Souza; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Machado,Marco Antonio; Packer,Irineu Umberto.
Nowadays, an important and interesting alternative in the control of tick-infestation in cattle is to select resistant animals, and identify the respective quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and DNA markers, for posterior use in breeding programs. The number of ticks/animal is characterized as a discrete-counting trait, which could potentially follow Poisson distribution. However, in the case of an excess of zeros, due to the occurrence of several noninfected animals, zero-inflated Poisson and generalized zero-inflated distribution (GZIP) may provide a better description of the data. Thus, the objective here was to compare through simulation, Poisson and ZIP models (simple and generalized) with classical approaches, for QTL mapping with counting phenotypes...

Zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility for the recovery of a saline soil with organic amendments Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Méndez,Judith Prieto; García,Francisco Prieto; González,Nallely Trejo; Santillán,Yolanda Marmolejo; Sandoval,Otilio Arturo Acevedo.
ABSTRACT The accumulation of salts in the soil profile produces conditions that affect the growth of crops. The effects of these conditions on crops and the intensity of these effects depend on the quantity and type of salts that predominate and are also influenced by soil characteristics and climate, among other aspects. The salinization of agricultural soils is a serious problem facing agriculture today. The use of organic amendments has increased in recent years, acting on the texture of the soil, correcting compaction or granularity problems, and influencing chemical and/or biological reactions. The objectives of this work were to analyze the use of compost and vermicompost using different analysis techniques to determine the influence of conditions on...

ABSTRACT Many countries in the Americas have detected local transmission of multiple arboviruses that cause febrile illnesses. Therefore, laboratory testing has become an important tool for confirming the etiology of these diseases. The present study aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of three different Zika virus detection assays. One hundred serum samples from patients presenting with acute febrile symptoms were tested using a previously reported TaqMan® RT-qPCR assay. We used a SYBR® Green RT-qPCR and a conventional PCR methodologies to compare the results. Of the samples that were determined to be negative by the TaqMan® RT-qPCR assay, 100% (Kappa = 0.670) were also found to be negative by SYBR® Green RT-qPCR based on Tm comparison;...

Polonio,Carolina Manganeli; Freitas,Carla Longo de; Zanluqui,Nagela Ghabdan; Peron,Jean Pierre Schatzmann.
Abstract Viral infections have long been the cause of severe diseases to humans, increasing morbidity and mortality rates worldwide, either in rich or poor countries. Yellow fever virus, H1N1 virus, HIV, dengue virus, hepatitis B and C are well known threats to human health, being responsible for many million deaths annually, associated to a huge economic and social cost. In this context, a recently introduced flavivirus in South America, called Zika virus (ZIKV), led the WHO to declare in February 1st 2016 a warning on Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). ZIKV is an arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family firstly isolated from sentinels Rhesus sp. monkeys at the Ziika forest in Uganda, Africa, in 1947. Lately, the virus has well adapted...
